Protest Alert! Walk Around Washington, DC, Naked!

Let’s start this with, a long time ago.  So long ago, it was during the time of the Old Testament of the bible. There was a prophet named Isaiah. And we can take a plan from him,the very first radical protester, to bring about change in our own country.

Now, Isaiah was a very educated man, related to some of the Kings and an advisor too.  Isaiah, chosen by God, was to preach doom to the children of Jerusalem unless they changed their ways. God’s children had turned from Him, and worshiped money, power, and idols.  It was a very prosperous, yet wicked nation.

When Isaiah asked God how long he had to preach this message of destruction, God replied, “Until their cities are destroyed with no one left in them.” Isaiah 6:11

Isaiah knew normal preaching would not result in action, from the people, fast enough.  So he resorted to utilizing signs and symbolism to drive his point home.  And we thought Americans had the market on demonstrating for our causes.

Can you see where I am going? We have written, talked to, and begged our legislatures to put down their self-centered agendas and do what is morally right for our country.  But they continue to turn a deaf ear to the American people.

Back to the story.

King Hezekiah was planning on signing a treaty with Egypt to gain protection from Assyria.  Isaiah knew if King Hezekiah and the Jewish people would put their faith in God, they would not need the treaty with Egypt.  But if they did sign the treaty with Egypt, it would seal their destruction from God.  As Hezekiah turned his deaf ear to Isaiah, Isaiah decided drastic actions must ensue.

For three years, Isaiah walked around Jerusalem naked or in a loin cloth (depending on your translation).  In verse 20:3 God tells of his servant Isaiah walking around Jerusalem naked and barefoot in protest. If God says it, you know it is the Truth! I guess Hezekiah got tired of seeing Isaiah’s naked hinny around town and decided to follow Isaiah’s advice. He did not sign a treaty with Egypt for protection.  And when the Assyrian army surrounded Jerusalem in 701 BC, God repaid their faithfulness.

“That night the angel of the Lord went out to the Assyrian camp and killed 185,000 Assyrian troops.” Isaiah 37:36

Now, maybe we don’t need to walk around Washington, DC naked.  The legislators might like it! But we do need to get this country back to its founding principles.  God and country, being self-reliant, loving our neighbor as we love ourselves, and doing what is right.  Because one day we may have a Hezekiah moment, when our country is surrounded by 185,000 foreign troops. Did we obey God enough, to be rewarded by God saving our worthless selves or will our enemies be allowed to run us into destruction? Look at what is happening today in our country and you may realize the answer.

We need to be like Isaiah and be reckless in our pursuit of God’s will and ways for ourselves, our families, and our country!
