Racism Amid Washington Scandals

While Washington is struggling to keep its head above water with their bombardment of scandals, some news reporters and high-profile individuals are throwing the race card into the ring.

Really? Must we go there?

When people do not agree with these individual’s opinion or viewpoint, we are called racist.  Or they utilize religious beliefs for a superiority angle in their preposterous rants, claiming to be better Christians.  Seeing them purposely throw our country back to the same mistakes of forty years ago, for their own personal gain, is sickening.

I have begun to wonder the amount of evil and angry division America can take, before she splits into the Divided States of America?  Will she be the place where mafia style government ensues, and hate becomes the premise for every action?  While the cries of the people are continually muffled by political agendas or monetary gain.

One of my favorite movies is Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner with Sidney Poitier, Katherine Hepburn, and Spencer Tracy.  It addresses racism, then and now, in a very pointed and thought-provoking way. And, I believe the truths spoken in this movie will never, ever be outdated.

So, Reverend Sharpton, take a line from Sidney Poitier’s character, when he is addressing his father and their differences.  Sidney tells his father, “Dad you think of yourself as a black man.”  He pauses and goes on with, “I think of myself as a man.”

Can you feel the magnitude of power in those two statements?

Statements which would benefit all of us, when referring to ourselves.  Now, I would reference myself as a Christian, who happens to be white and female. How would you reference yourself? And Reverend Sharpton, Alan Colmes, and Chris Matthews, how do you reference yourself? What moniker labels are you proud to wear? Would hate mongering be one of them?

And if that was not enough in the movie, watch Spencer Tracy’s speech at the very end.  For in the end, he reminds us that all that should matter is love, not a pigmentation problem! Love for one another.

Funny, but I think Jesus states this fact in Matthew 22:36-40, when asked which commandment is the greatest one?

36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Before you start calling names, wouldn’t it be more prudent to come together to figure out solutions?  Yes, our President has a situation which may lead him to the same situation as Andrew Jackson, Richard Nixon,  and Bill Clinton. If the decisions, that were made, had been backed with love for your fellow-man/woman, would  we be here now?

History teaches us that power-hungry politicians, leaders, and hate mongers usually end in ruin.  Their legacy is one of infamy and ridicule.  My fear is they don’t care, because they can’t see past their own blinding egos.  And then there will be no United States of America, home of the free and brave, for my grandchildren and yours!
