Last night I attended a yearly woman’s gathering at our church called “Table Top.” Filled with fellowship and creativity, the women sit at different tables decorated to a biblical theme. This year the theme was “A Fragrant Offering.”
Now, the men of the church wore black pants, white shirts, and bow ties because they were the waiters. And, we women were served a delicious catered dinner along with soul lifting music. At the end, Bonnie Boone, delighted and enthralled us with her perspective of “A Fragrant Offering.” It was an awe-inspiring night!
Remembrance of the night brings a question to my mind for you. What does a “fragrant offering mean to your life? As you ponder my question, I can give you a hint of what it should not mean. A “fragrant offering” is not when you take a bath and slather yourself in perfume, go to church, sit on the front pew, and say “Ok God, here I am, smell me?” Others inside your sanctuary may be able to smell you, but this is not how God smells you.
God smells your heart. You are His fragrant offering!
You are the blessed aroma God has wanted from the beginning, way back in the Garden of Eden!
When I think of a fragrant offering, I think of Mary. Sitting in a room with Jesus, taking her white jar of perfume, pouring it on his feet, and wiping with her long hair. We are told the aroma filled the room. I believe the aroma was not only the perfume, but her love and worshipfulness that filled the room.
So at my table, I tried to convey this by using the theme “Mary’s Nard, Jerusalem Perfume Company, Est. 33.” I provided an ingredient’s list too, which was unconditional love, faithfulness, kindness, joy, generosity, praise, and worshipfulness. I even put a warning label. “Warning, the wearer of this perfume will become a fragrant offering to our Lord.” For I believe to become a fragrant offering to the Lord is a very powerful thing.
So, what does your heart smell like on a daily basis? Are you a fragrant offering or do you smell like a sun-rottened egg? Full of anger, resentment, vengeance, foul language, self-serving, self-centered, loyal member of the “what’s happening now” popular citizens?
Whew! God’s nostrils must really flair when He gets a whiff of those hearts!
Or, are you like most of us? Who have a willing heart with smatterings of love and kindness, that will sometimes get sprinkled with anger and self-serving attitudes. Attitudes which are overcome by the circumstance of the day, week, month, or even the year. If so, then we smell like a passing fart in the hallway. And we can’t grab the Febreze to clear the air.
We can grab forgiveness with both hands!
Because all God wants is you! His child, His baby, His fragrant offering!
So what is in your heart these days?
