Lately, we are seeing more of our friends and family under attack by “cancer.” Maybe it is our age and that time of life, or maybe it is the environment we now all live in. None-the- less, this word can bring you to the realization of our world’s limitations; and our lives’.
Now in my family, we have seen the worst of cancer. My mother, Sondra West Nelson, my father-in-law, Millard Eugene Berry II, and my sister-in-law, Pamela Jean Berry; all succumbed to this terrible disease. And we the family, died a little with each one.
While praying, yesterday, for friends and family stricken with this notorious invader, God brought to mind Psalm 79. I picked up my bible and began to read the psalm. The first part is Israel complaining to God about the invasion which has happened to them.
I could not help to think, “Wow, Lord, this is cancer. Cancer is a notorious invader of our bodies!” Then it dawned on me that this psalm could be utilized for a prayer about being sick with cancer!
Like I have stated in the past, “I am one of God’s hard-headed children and slow to learn. He has to knock me to my knees or explain 2 and 2 together.” My eyes are now wide open!
1 O God, the nations have invaded your inheritance;
they have defiled your holy temple,
they have reduced Jerusalem to rubble.
Beginning of my prayer…O God, cancer has invaded your inheritance, your child; cancer has defiled the dwelling place of your Holy Spirit and reduced it to rubble.
The middle part of the psalm is a petition to God for help.
8 Do not hold against us the sins of past generations; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need.
My prayer…Please forgive me of my past sins, known and unknown; may your healing mercies come quickly to me, for I am in desperate need of You, O Lord!
The last part is praise.
13 Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture,
will praise you forever;
from generation to generation
we will proclaim your praise.
My prayer...Father, as your healing mercies bathe me, this lost sheep of your pasture, praises You. I will praise you throughout my sickness and throughout my health, until we meet in Heaven! Amen.
Ok, I am always amazed at the words, God so graciously gives me to write. This prayer is for all who are suffering with sickness. I pray it will ease your pain, and fill your heart with hope. For it is written and given in love!
